About “Stichting 18 September” (“Foundation 18th of September”)

The Foundation 18th of September views it as its task to actively engage the citizens of Eindhoven in the festivities surrounding the commemoration of the liberation by allied troops. In 1944, their arrival in the city brought about cause for large scale , spontaneous festivities, which have become an annual tradition since 1945.

During the celebrations of the liberation's 60th anniversary in 2004, the awareness of the unavoidable absence of attendance by veterans in the future, led to the following mission statement being put into effect:

"To translate into a clear message the memories and events of 18 September 1944, in which the Four Freedoms* are articulated"

* The Four Freedoms are goals famously articulated by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the State of the Union Address he delivered to the 77th United States Congress on January 6, 1941. In an address also known as the Four Freedoms speech, Roosevelt enumerated four points as fundamental freedoms humans "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy:

1. Freedom of speech and expression
2. Freedom of every person to worship God in his own way
3. Freedom from want — individual economic security
4. Freedom from fear
